Treatment of Cervical Spine Injuries with Anterior Plate Fusion Techinique

Abstract
This study analyzed 56 patients who underwent a single anterior precedure involving appropriate anterior decompression, tricortical bone grafting, and anteriorly applied cervical veretebral plates and screws for the treatment of their acute lower
cervical spine injury. The average age of the patients had predominantly vertebral body fractures and were treated by two segmental anterior bone grafting and plating, thirty-five patients had predominantly discoligamentous or osteoligamentous,
and
were
treated by one segments bone graft and plating. Twenty-one patients were neurologically intact. Follow up detected a less that 2% incidence of significant complications and excellent fusion rate(98.2%). Anterior decompression, bone grafting, and
metallic osteosynthesis are thought to provide a valuable means of treating acute lower cervical spine trauma.
